It is my belief that when we are new to a craft or art, it's quite likely we will need to learn what that art form is all about. And that the very best way to learn is to start where you are with whatever droplet of inspiration that you might have and then one must find others who are performing the same art and learn from them and what inspires them.
So, my first junk journal is a semi failure. I didn't have a clear idea of what I was doing only a vague notion. And while I found I had a good eye for potential materials, i.e. junk, I lack skill in executing what my vision saw. A few pages of the Christmas journal turned out cute, some were a mess and some downright ugly. My biggest mistake was failing to have a blank space to journal! I can remedy that by going back and adding in pockets and then tucking embellished labels and tags and sheets into pockets and envelopes. These fun little books are meant to be used as a true journal with photos, writings, quotes, etc., as well as a way to express an artistic point of view.
However, mess that it might be, incomplete though it is, I thought I'd share a few of my better pages with you, just in case this is something that you too would like to look into. Please, please do not judge my lack of skill as what all junk journals will look like. There is a wide variety of styles out there and I was strictly limiting myself to just what I had on hand, not buying a thing.
I found a new vlogger whose work I really like. She is skilled in teaching the why and how to of junk journals that no other vlogger had explained. Her name is Cat Hand. I've shared the YouTube link. And her Instagram is @cat_hand. She's very good and sells her things online, creates some of her own printables, etc. But she also makes good use of junk, bits and pieces clipped from a magazine or catalog, packaging, etc.
If this is something that might interest you, please do go look her up. Her style is totally different from that of the first artist I shared.
I'm going to try to get these photos in the same order as they are in my journal. There are several blank pages still in my journal and at least two that I want to completely redo because they were not pretty nor imaginative in anyway. I can do better if i take time to play about a bit before I start to build the page. And yes, I will definitely give myself spaces to 'journal'.
This page has a sort of 3-D effect because the bows are not quite flat. Just a variety of scrap pieces of paper on this page. I wanted this page to represent the pile of presents I'd put under my tree this year. One of my best decisions was to wrap early and enjoy the sight of those wrapped presents. I'm glad I didn't deny myself the pleasure of seeing that pile of prettily wrapped gifts.
My goal with this little book has been to chronicle our Christmas this year. I'd like to add a page that documents the movies we saw over the month and another one with a little pocket that I can add recipe cards for the cookies I made this year.
I'd like to add a page that has our menu for Christmas day on it and notes about how the table was set.
I've begun a page with a stocking on it. I'd like to tuck in a list of things we really enjoyed in our stockings this year and a few suggestions for next year...Which reminds me, I bought a book to tuck into my stocking, and I completely forgot it!
This is my very first attempt at a junk journal. I have plans to start another journal here very shortly, but I want to wait until after the first of the year. I've already accumulated a nice little bit of stuff to use.
Later: I have just finished the last page...Not to say that it's completely finished because I may continue to add highlights, outlines, borders, etc., but at this point every page is full and I'm pleased at the moment with how they all have come out.

I love this! You've inspired me - I am going to try this but am going to use a notebook first - I am someone who gets overwhelmed by the thought of too many new things at once ( like binding! )
ReplyDeleteYou can use any item you choose! There are so many ideas online, both on YouTube and on Pinterest to look at. The main thing is to START. I am a secret perfectionist and will put off doing things because I want to do it perfectly.
DeleteHere's the thing when we're creating: sometimes we have to go through the ugly part of the process to get to the pretty parts. Sorta like life... lol
I really have learned a lot from Cat Hand on you tube including how to make 'signatures' (has nothing to do with handwriting), and how to bind them into your covering. I don't have a lot of the tools she uses. Some you can improvise, but I don't have an ice pick nor an awl.
Just wanted to add that you've inspired me to reuse the 2025 planner I used for last year. It's spiral bound and had hardcover already. I counted up and have at least ten pages for each month of 2026. Bonus, I can use some of the lined areas to write a quick journal entry.
DeleteAnd you me - am going to start today!
Deletehello Terri, this looks like such a fun craft. I like the idea of making a year book, with highlights from each month.
ReplyDeleteI told Elizabeth I wanted to focus on a craft every month. SHe loved the idea and she would like making a book like this too.
Rhonda, another vlogger I like on this subject is called It's Probably Sharon. She does proper journals with lots of writing space in her journals but all sorts of neat tags and tab and closures.
ReplyDeleteI've been contemplating what my next journal will look like. I'm debating a seasonal journal (one for each quarter of the year) or a month-by-month journal, or a larger annual one. I think I'm leaning on the seasonal aspect the hardest though. So, my first for the New Year would be a Winter journal.
Happy New Year!
ReplyDeleteAnd to you too Casey!
DeleteThe highlights each month are a good way to start a junk journal. I've been waffling on starting one as my muse must be hibernating. Your pages are giving me inspiration. Thanks for the links to various ladies who are talented at this craft. Looking forward to seeing more of your pages.
ReplyDeleteI started a new journal just yesterday reusing my spiral bound planner for 2025. I had such a lovely morning walk and wanted to save that memory so I started my first page.
ReplyDeleteTerri,
ReplyDeleteThat beginning of a new hobby is just lovely! It looks like you were inspired by all the pretty things that pop up around Christmas. I love it and I hope you will continue to show us your creativity. Dale Happy New Year!
The journey you described sounds so familiar. But unlike you, I usually give up pretty quickly because I'm not "perfect" because I want to be. LOL It's a mental battle I have fought since childhood. I think your first junk journal turned out nicely. We are always our worst critics. There are lots of fun junk journal vloggers that I love even though I still don't do much.
ReplyDeleteMy inner critic has a very scathing opinion of all things and I do my best to quell it otherwise I'd never do anything because I do most everything imperfectly. I have determined I shall give myself the gift of allowing me to LEARN how to do things. And when it comes to art, I won't follow a set rule but trust my inner creative spirit.
DeleteThe Journal I've begun for 2026 looks nothing like the Christmas journal. It's not as whimsical. It's cleaner and neater so far. But I do admire the junkier journals and the creativity required to make them. So I shall likely work on another one here shortly. In fact, I was making components to use in them this evening. I spent hours clipping papers and mixing them on tags and making envelopes and such.
